A scholarly review of the Methodology of Ashraf Ali Thanvi in “Tafseer Bayan-ul- Quran” تفسیربیان القرآن میں اشرف علی تھانویؒ کامنہج: ایک تحقیقی جائزہ
Abstract
Allah has sent down the Holy Quran for the complete guidance of mankind. To understand the meanings of Quran, the science of tafsir was introduced. It is the science through which Quran is understood, its meanings are explained, and its rulings and wisdom are derived. The Holy Quran has been revealed in Arabic language. At the time of revelation, the mother language of those people was Arabic, so no problem they faced in understanding the Holy Quran. If they faced any problem, they asked the prophet (SAW). So the science of tafsir started in the prophetic era, and the Holy prophet (SAW) is the first interpreter of the Holy Quran. Till the period of the companions and the successors, the interpretation of the Holy Quran was based on two sources i.e Tafsir e Quran bil Quran, Tafsir Quran bil Ahadith. And when they did not find a clear guidance from these two sources, they used Ijtihad. So, three sources of the interpretation of the Holy Quran came into being i.e Tafsir e Quran bil Quran, Tafsir e Quran bil Ahadith and Tafsir e Quran by the narrations of the Companions and Successors. When Islam spread in Non-Arab nations, then the Holy Quran was interpreted in different languages. Till now, large numbers of tafasir were compiled. Every tafsir has its own features and methodology. Among these one tafsir was compiled by a great scholar Asharaf Ali Thanvi. In this article methodology of Asharaf Ali Thanvi in his “Tafsir Bayanul-Quran” is reviewed in a scholarly manner.
