Environmental Sustainability through Pro Environmental Behaviors in the light of Prophetic Guidance
Abstract
Constantly, humans interact with their environment that always has great influence on them to smaller or greater extent. So the human behaviours (especially related with environment) can be called environmental behaviours. With the passage of time, due to malpractices of human in ecosystems, biosphere and climate, scholars in general and professionals in particular have tried to focus on such environmental behaviour related to, pollution, waste production, raw materials, and usage of energy. Due to improper guidance and socialization of individual, most of the people do not realize the consequences of their behaviour and their impact on environment– e.g. plucking flowers or smoking. Being based on the environmental science, most of the cases can be judged according to their impact and can be attributed to the friendly or unfriendly conduct.
Pro environmental behaviour (PEBs) is a behaviour which consciously finds to capitalize on positive impact of individual’s action on nature and construct a healthy world which means that the major purpose of pro environmental behaviour is to minimize the negative impact of individual activities. It is important to understand the factors promoting the environmental protection behaviours. The factors underlying environmental behaviour have generally been found from different theoretical perspectives; culture, social norms and ethics of society and religious inclination etc.
Islam, a divine religion provides complete code of life and offers its guidance for every sphere of life which includes the environmental protective behaviour. Ḥadīth being the explicit part of Islamic teaching determines the protective environmental behaviours, its principles and precautions and discussed them in detail but this guidance was not compiled in a single framework. Some of these guidelines include usage of water resources; eradicate pollution, purity of food, etc. The literature related to these aspects will be employed in this research study to analyze the guidelines provided by Prophet Muḥammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) for pro environmental behaviour that can be derived from Usūl e- Sitta-the basic six collections of the sayings of Prophet Muḥammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم).The emphasis of research is on protective behaviour only which on one hand helps in developing an environmental consciousness and provides the solutions of the environmental problems on the other.
