Relationship between Parental Supervision and Juvenile Delinquency: A Qualitative Study of South Punjab Pakistan

Children became delinquent when they commit any prohibited action, they are considered juveniles because of the age factor. The most important purpose of the study was to investigate juvenile delinquency and parental supervision. The second goal of the study was to explore the relationship between socioeconomic uncertainty and juvenile delinquency. The last target of this research was to examine the psychological impact on juveniles. The qualitative approach was adopted to precede this research. Convenience sampling was used and data was collected through an interview guide. For the interview guide, some close-ended and some open-ended questions were formulated. Every jailed person was not targeted but only those children were included who were under the age of 18 years. The case study was used in this qualitative research and the total sample size was 20 respondents’ juveniles from Muzaffarghar and Layyah jails. The most important and relevant results in this research were lack of parental supervision, socialization, psychological impacts, educational background, societal framework and peer groups which was considered the most important factor because children learn different kind of acts from their age fellows. Economic condition was also a major factor for juveniles to commit delinquent behavior. Poverty was the leading factor that was also investigated in this research. The research identified that family institution was a significant structure to control delinquent behavior and play a key role in the socialization of the children because the parent can guide their children and socialize their children to respect the rights of others. The cause of delinquent behavior was parental absence at home due to different reasons and the most common reason was earning bread. This lack of involvement by parents increases the risk factor of delinquency.
