Abstract

Purpose -The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of the cognitivist theories application at secondary school level in Pakistan. The objective of the study included: to experimentally investigate the application of cognitivists learning theories for teaching science subjects at secondary school level; to compare the effectiveness of cognitive learning strategies with traditional methodologies; and to suggest cognitivist theories application for teaching science subjects at secondary school level in Pakistan.Methodology - The nature of the study was quasi-experimental with non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design in the subjects of science at secondary school level. The hypothesis of the study was that the application of cognitivist theories has positive impact on student’s achievement at secondary school level. The methodology used for the study and experimental procedure included random sampling for selection of students from the target population of secondary school students in district Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Pakistan).Findings. The data analysis revealed that the application of cognitivist theories for teaching science subjects at secondary school level has produced significantly different and high effect as compared to traditional teachings. Recommendation - On the basis of findings and conclusion of the study it is recommended that the science teachers may apply cognitivist theories for teaching science subjects at secondary school level. The teachers training program of science teachers may focus cognitivist’s theories application for teaching physics, chemistry, biology and other related science subjects at secondary school level in Pakistan.
