School Monitoring System in Punjab: Challenges Confronted By Internal Schools Monitors

In Punjab (Pakistan), an internal school monitoring system is in practice along with an external monitoring system. Internal monitors faced some problems while doing school monitoring. This study aimed to identify the problems faced by internal school monitors and analyze the effects of monitors’ problems on their efficiency in monitoring the elementary schools. The study was delimited to the district Mianwali, which has three tehsils. A census sampling technique was used to select the study sample. A self-developed questionnaire based on a 5-point Likert scale was used as an instrument and finalized after validation through experts’ opinions to face and content validity. Data were collected from 99 Assistant Education Officers (AEOs), i.e., internal school monitors. The study found that a strong mechanism of school monitoring exists but is not properly organized, having some problems such as lack of power and authority of internal monitors, social interference in their work, and insufficient financial resources. The internal monitors cannot give proper attention to the school’s monitoring due to their socio-economic and professional problems. Their efficiency may be improved by solving these problems.
